Located in southern Asia, island in the Indian Ocean, south of India. Climate is tropical monsoon; northeast monsoon (Dec-Mar); southwest monsoon (Jun-Oct). Sri Lanka has a strategic location near major Indian Ocean sea lanes. Forests at one time covered nearly the entire island, but by the late 20th century forests and forest reserves covered only one-fifth of the land. As the forested areas declined, thereby threatening various species of wildlife, Sri Lanka became the first country in the world to establish a wildlife sanctuary.
