Xif de J is a family based group working in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. It was founded by Ivan Franco and the name itself literally means Ivan Franco multiplied by the power of Jesus – X (if) de J. Ivan had worked all his life in wood & carpentry and then had an accident that made the heavy work of carpentry impossible. He was left with nothing but still had a family to support. He prayed fervently for days and within a couple of weeks his friends introduced him to Aid to Artisans an American NGO. They helped him to apply his carpentry skills to artisanal work and the results are visible in the beautiful hand-turned pieces he produces. He credits both his good fortune & many of his unique design ideas to powers greater than himself and the workshop provides work at fair trade pay to both carpenters & artisans. In the long term, he is interested in purchasing forested land local to his community so that he can ensure sustainable harvesting and teach both the craft of woodworking and sustainability to local youth.
