Machakos District Co-operative Union Ltd. (MDCU) was formed by small-scale coffee growers in 1964. It organises the production, processing and marketing of coffee, cotton, cereals and other cash crops produced by member cooperative societies and self-help groups in the Machakos District. In 1988 another section was created to provide artisans the same organisation, marketing and transportation of their handcraft goods. Today MDCU has a membership of 50 societies, comprising 140,000 households or 1.4 million individuals in rural areas of Kenya.
