Assyria the area that once had kings who had controlled a large kingdom at three different times in history. The Old which was form the 20th to 15th century BC, the Middle which was from the 15th to the 10th century BC and the Neo – Assyrian which was from 911 to 612 BC. Assyria was originally a region on the Upper Tigris River named for its original capital, the ancient city of Assur. Their art preserved is mostly from the Neo-Assyrian period. The art depicts battle scenes and at times the impaling of whole villages in gory detail, was intended to show the power of the emperor. Some stone reliefs depict the king with different deities and conducting religious ceremonies. Many of the stone reliefs were discovered in the royal palaces at Nimrud and Khorsabad. Sculptures also had their moment of glory with a prominent example being the winged bull Lamassu.
