The Chilean art of glass making comes from recycled glass in many cases with special techniques that create a colorful & fun underwater scenery with the variety of bubbles throughout. This “vidrio fundido” is cut into the desired shapes. Then the artisans paint them with a special enamel pigment. They can also add in a product that reacts with the temperature of the kiln to product bubbles between the two layers of glass. The pieces are left in a kiln for 30 minutes to an hour. Once the pieces have cooled, the glass products are coated with a reinforcing agent. Many of these artisans live an economically struggling life and by exporting their traditional art, they are able to improve their life along with continuing to preserve their traditions.
